For the Ride of Your Life:

"It may well be that there is no human urge more fundamental than that of making a mark"-

In the words of Chuck Close: "You Just Have to Show Up

"I would like to make something that is real in itself," [Arthur Dove] once wrote, "that does not remind anyone of any other thing, and that does not have to be explained like the letter A, for instance."

“Art is never an end in itself; it is only an instrument for tracing the lines of lives.”

—Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari (qtd. in West)

The Roller Coaster is being Pulled out of the Lake

Well....it is now mid-April and I have lost almost 2 weeks of working because of flood situations in my town and home.
However, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. I am now off from working at the high school for Spring Break, and am thrilled to be back in my studio sans illumination, the water level has subsided and we are back in business.
Thanks to Hannah and Georgie for their understanding.

This type of thing really makes you realize just how much stuff you don't need.
It also makes me think about ways to "clean out" my works. Tough thing to accomplish.
The questions arise "How spare can I be without compromising my love of representation, of form, of shadow and light? How narrative can my pieces 'be' without leaving room for others to create their own stories? Finally, how much of the old can be kept in combination with contemporary ideas? Time will tell.
The ride has just re-started!
